Undergraduate Student Admissions (Outlines)

At YNU, international students are admitted under “Yokohama Global Education Program (YGEP).” YGEP-N1 seeks international students with Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 level of Japanese by “Standard Admission” and “Pre-arrival Admission”. The students will study the standard curriculum with Japanese students in Japanese. YGEP-N2 seeks international students with JLPT N2 level of Japanese living abroad by Pre-arrival Admission. The students will study Japanese language and culture intensively during the first year and study their specialized areas with Japanese students in Japanese from the second year onwards. In either case, students are NOT required to take the JLPT prior to their application.

Application Qualifications (For April 2019 Admissions)

Non-Japanese citizens who meet the following basic qualifications and requirements are eligible.

Basic Qualifications

Applicants must fulfill one of the following criteria:

  1. Those who have finished or are expected to finish 12 years of school education in countries other than Japan by March 31, 2019 or those who have been recognized as equivalent to the above by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
  2. Those who have obtained or expecting to obtain one of the qualifications listed below and who have or will have reached the age of 18 by March 31, 2019.
    1. International Baccalaureate qualification awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization, a non-profit foundation established in accordance with the Civil Code of Switzerland
    2. Abitur accredited as a qualification for admission to a university in the states of the Federal Republic of Germany
    3. Baccalaureate accredited as a qualification for admission to a university in the Republic of France
    4. General Certificate of Education of Advanced Level (GCE Advanced Level), [obtaining grade E or above in 3 or more subjects] accredited as a qualification for admission to a university in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
  3. Those who have completed or expecting to complete a 12-year curriculum in an education institution accredited by the international evaluating organizations designated by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (WASC, ACSI or CIS), and who have or will have reached the age of 18 by March 31, 2019.

Notes: “12-year curriculum in an education institution abroad” refers to schools whose geographical location is outside Japan, which in principle are officially recognized in the country’s education system, and which confer to graduates the eligibility to apply to universities. Applicants from schools such as international schools or American schools (except those who satisfy Basic Qualification 2) or 3)) should consult with us at an early stage as the confirmation of their eligibility status may take time.

Designated Requirements

Applicants must meet requirements 1), 2) and 3)

  1. Those who have or will have a visa with which admission to the university would not be in violation of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
  2. Those who have taken the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students in either June or November 2018 and who meet other requirements designated by the college concerned. (See the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) Chart below.)
  3. Those who have taken the TOEFL or TOEIC or IELTS as required by the college concerned and who meet the English requirements designated by the college concerned. (See the EJU Chart below.)

If applying for “Pre-arrival Admission”, applicants must meet the following two requirements as well as the designated requirements 1), 2) and 3) above.

  1. Those who have taken the EJU in either June (College of Engineering Science and College of Urban Sciences) or November (College of Urban Science) 2018 outside Japan.
  2. Those whose place of residence is outside Japan

Notes:

  1. Non-Japanese students who have or will have graduated from a Japanese high school, middle school, or other educational institution in Japan will be treated as general applicants, and are NOT eligible.
  2. Those applying for the College of Economics or Business Administration must choose one from Standard EP and GBEEP at the time of application.
  3. Those applying for the College of Engineering Science must choose one Educational Program at the time of application.
  4. To obtain a college student visa, applicants must have a solid financial footing to maintain their student life.

Application Procedure

Application Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents to the dean of the appropriate college either by applying in person or sending by post.

  1. Prescribed application form of the college in Japanese.
  2. Certificate of (expected) graduation (or completion) certificate from the high school attended.
  3. Academic transcript from the high school attended.
  4. EJU application slip (and score report).
  5. Certificate of English language proficiency (TOEFL or TOEIC or IELTS)
  6. Copy of the resident card or copy of passport.
  7. Receipt for payment of the application fee.
  8. Self-addressed stamped envelope.
  9. Other documents required by the college concerned (such as the video presentation).

2. As to “Apply in Person”, the applicant must bring the necessary documents by himself/herself within the application period. As to “Send by Post”, the submitted documents must be received by the college during the application period.

3. The TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS score report must be submitted at the time of application. Please start the preparation well in advance as it will take time to be issued.

4. As for the EJU score report, either a June or November 2018 test score is acceptable (ie. cannot submit both.)

Selection Procedure (For April 2019 Admission)

Standard Admission

The selection of new students will be based on performance in a variety of individual achievement tests (this may include tests of academic ability, an interview and a short essay), performance on the EJU, and official transcripts from previous schools. Applicants are not required to take the National Center Test for University Admissions. Each college’s selection process is as follows:

Note:
The College of Economics will interview those shortlisted in the first stage screening, which is based on the applicant’s EJU and TOEFL or TOEIC scores.

Pre-arrival Admission

Applicants will be screened holistically, based on the application form, academic transcripts, scores of EJU, certificate of English language proficiency, video presentation (Japanese), and interview. The interview may become void if the identification of the applicant is deemed difficult due to the local Internet connection. The interview will take place via the Internet, using such services as Google Hangouts and Skype. Accordingly, the interviewees must prepare computer facilities with camera and microphone functions, as well as fast Internet connection. The interview will be conducted in Japanese and will be within 30 minutes.
