Graduate Student Admissions (Outlines)

The following is an overview of the graduate student selection process at YNU. Please note that the majority of the classes, seminars and examinations at YNU, except the Graduate School of Engineering Science, are conducted in Japanese. There are, however, many faculty members who are fully proficient to lecture and provide academic supervision in English and other languages. There are international students who first enroll as research students for six months or one year prior to their graduate studies, to prepare for the entrance examinations of the graduate schools under the supervision of their academic advisors, and/or improve their Japanese language proficiencies, and make themselves accustomed to their new lives in Japan. Application Qualifications

Non-Japanese citizens who meet one of the following requirements are eligible.

Master’s course

  1. Those who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a Japanese university before they wish to commence enrollment.
  2. Those who have finished 16 years of education in countries other than Japan or who are expected to finish before they wish to commence enrollment.
  3. Those who have been recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan as having achieved a level of education equivalent to that provided by a Japanese university. (Contact the appropriate graduate school for details.)
  4. Those who have been recognized by the graduate school concerned in an independent screening process as having equivalent or superior academic ability to university graduates, and become 22 years old or older before they wish to commence enrollment.

Doctoral course

  1. Those who have obtained a master’s degree from a Japanese graduate school or who are expected to receive a master’s degree before they wish to commence enrollment.
  2. Those who have a degree equivalent to a master’s degree from countries other than Japan or who are expected to receive such a degree before they wish to commence enrollment.
  3. Those who have been recognized by the graduate school concerned in an independent screening process as having achieved a level of education equivalent or superior to that obtained by earning a master’s degree and who become 24 years old or older before they wish to commence enrollment.

Application Procedure

Application Documents

The applicant must submit the following documents to the dean of the graduate school in which he or she wishes to study.

  1. Prescribed application form.
  2. Certificate of (expected) graduation from the last school attended.
  3. Academic transcript from the last school attended.
  4. Description of the research plan the applicant wishes to pursue.
  5. Copy of the resident card or copy of passport.
  6. Receipt for payment of the application fee.
  7. Self-addressed stamped envelope.
  8. Any other documents required by the graduate school concerned(such as Certificate of English language or Japanese language proficiency).

The majority of programs in the Graduate School of International Social Sciences and the doctoral program of the Graduate School of Urban Innovation (Pre-arrival Admissions only) require applicants to apply via the Web Application system.open a new window.. Applicants may also need to submit supplemental materials by regular mail, depending on each program’s requirements.

The graduate schools of science/technologies majors require applicants to find a suitable academic advisor and obtain his/her consent prior to making the application. You can find research fields and contact address of our faculty members on the “List of Faculty Members.”open a new window.

Application fee can be paid at convenience stores in Japan or by credit card.
