Graduate Student Admissions
We are very pleased that you are interested in our university. Here we provide you a brief introduction on the selection process of graduate students at our university.
Please be noted that most of the classes and seminars at YNU are conducted in Japanese. However, there are many faculty members who are capable of teaching and supervising in English or other languages. For details please refer to the “The List of Professors Available”
and “Academic Research Staff”

Application Qualifications
For Master’s Program
Non-Japanese citizens who meet the following basic qualifications and designated requirements are eligible.
- Those who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a Japanese university by March 31 of the year they wish to enter a course
- Those who have finished 16 years of education in countries other than Japan or who are expected to finish by March 31 of the year they wish to enter a course
- Those who have been recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan as having achieved a level of education equivalent to that provided by a Japanese university (Contact the university for details.)
- According to the Yokohama National University Graduate School, those who have been recognized in an independent screening process as having equivalent or superior academic ability to university graduates and are 22 years old or older as of March 31 of the year they wish to enter a course
For Doctoral Program
Non-Japanese citizens who meet one of the following requirements are eligible.
- Those who have obtained a master’s degree from a Japanese graduate school or who are expected to receive a master’s degree by March 31 of the year they wish to enter the course
- Those who have a degree equivalent to a master’s degree from countries other than Japan or who are expected to receive such a degree by March 31 of the year they wish to enter the course
- Those who have been recognized in the Yokohama National University Graduate School’s independent screening process as having achieved a level of education equivalent or superior to that obtained by earning a master’s degree and who are 24 years old or older as of March 31 of the year they wish to enter a course
Application Procedures
Necessary Documents
The applicant must submit the following documents to the dean of the graduate school in which he or she wishes to study during the application period designated by each graduate school.
- One prescribed application form in Japanese
- One copy of the applicant’s graduation certificate from the last school attended
- One academic transcript from the last school attended
- One description of the research plan the applicant wishes to pursue
- One copy of the applicant’s passport or certificate of registered matters (Only for those who have college student status under Japan’s immigration laws)
NB: From July 2012, Certificate of Residence or Certificate of Special Permanent Residence will also be valid. - Two passport-size photos taken within the past three months (attached to the application form)
- Any other documents required by the graduate school concerned

Notes: In general, each graduate school starts distributing the application form, guideline and other documents one month before the application period.
Entrance Examinations
Written or oral examinations are given by all graduate schools. To receive further information as well as application forms, please contact the appropriate graduate school and specify the course of study you are applying for.
