Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program

Yokohama National University is recruiting students who want to enter its graduate schools under the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program.

For the International Ph.D. Program in Economics of the Department of Economics , only those who have applied to the program (Application period: September 14 – October 5, 2018) can apply for the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program. The Doctoral Program in Japanese Management of the Department of Business Administration and the Doctoral Program in Transnational Law and Policy of the Department of International Business Law do not admit students under the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program as they currently recruit students through different admission procedures.

Application Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must have Chinese citizenship and be eligible to apply for the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program set by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) as well as meet all the following requirements:

  1. Having completed a master's program and earned a master's degree or being expected to have completed a master's program and earned a master's degree at any of the universities that have an academic exchange agreement with YNU (including department-level agreements) or those designated as the “Project 211” institutions before their admission to YNU.
  2. Having demonstrated excellent academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above in the last two academic years and being expected to maintain the equivalent level during their enrollment at YNU.
  3. Intending to earn a doctoral degree within 48 months of their admission to Yokohama National University YNU as a doctoral student.
  4. Having asked the academic advisor of their choice about research details, acceptance conditions and the like, and having obtained permission to apply and the Letter of Conditional AcceptanceWordファイルが開きます before submitting their application.

Note: Although the documents need not be originals at the time of application, if the short-listed applicants successfully pass the screening conducted by the CSC, they must submit the originals, or the certified true copies issued by public institutions such as their university (of those marked by * below), together with the certificate of approval issued by the CSC.

Application Procedures

  1. Check application qualification and conditions
    With reference to the Application GuidelinesPDFファイルが開きます and Academic Performance Entry Sheet,It open a excel file. applicants must first check whether their grade point average is 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above in the last two academic years as well as whether they satisfy other conditions of eligibility.
  2. Find a prospective academic advisor
    If applicants can confirm that they satisfy all the conditions, they must prepare the necessary documents and contact the prospective academic advisor of their choice, consult with him/her about their research details, acceptance conditions and the like, and obtain the Letter of Conditional Acceptance.Wordファイルが開きます The List of Faculty Members is useful to find a prospective academic advisor.
  3. Submit application documents
    Applicants must submit the copies of Letter of Conditional Acceptance issued by their prospective academic advisor and the application documents (1) – (12) by email to YNU International Admissions Office (iao(アットマークを記入して下さい)ynu.ac.jp) no later than 11:00 p.m., Friday, January 4, 2019 (Japanese standard time ); otherwise, the application will not be accepted.

Notice of Screening Results

Applicants will be notified of their results by email on Friday, February 8, 2019. If they pass the screening, the “Letter of Conditional Acceptance Admission” and the “Certificate of Exemption” will be issued to them as a short-listed applicant. The short-listed applicant will be considered as a successful applicant if he/she has passed the screening conducted by the CSC, and has emailed a copy of and posted the original of the certificate of approval issued by the CSC (both in Chinese and English) to the International Admissions Office together with the originals or the certified true copies of the application documents.

Application Fee, Admission Fee, and Tuition Fee

Applicants do not need to pay an application fee. Successful applicants are exempt from admission and tuition fees. Note that if their academic performance is significantly poor after their admission, they may not be exempt from their tuition fee.

The Department of Economics (except the International M. A. Program in Economics) and the Department of International Business Law do not admit students under the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program as they currently recruit students through different admission procedures. For the International M. A. Program in Economics of the Department of Economics, only those who have applied to the program (Application period: September 14 – October 5, 2018) can apply for the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program. The program offered by the Department of Business Administration is taught mainly in Japanese and partly in English. You can write your Master’s thesis either in Japanese or in English.

Application Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must have Chinese citizenship and be eligible to apply for the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program set by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) as well as meet all the following requirements:

  1. Having completed an undergraduate program and earned a bachelor’s degree or being expected to have completed an undergraduate program and earned a bachelor’s degree at any of the universities that have an academic exchange agreement with YNU (including department-level agreements) or those designated as the “Project 211” institutions before their admission to YNU.
  2. Having demonstrated excellent academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above in the last two academic years and being expected to maintain the equivalent level during their enrollment at YNU.
  3. Intending to earn a master’s degree within 24 months of their admission to YNU as a master’s student, and to continue their research to earn a doctoral degree from the university.
    Note: To be admitted as a doctoral student under the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program, applicants will need to pass the screenings conducted by YNU and CSC. In principle, the entrance to the doctoral program will be in October.
  4. Having asked the academic advisor of their choice about research details, acceptance conditions and the like, and having obtained permission to apply and the Letter of Conditional AcceptanceWordファイルが開きます before submitting their application.
  5. If applicants you wish to apply for the Department of Business Administration of Graduate School of International Social Sciences, they must have N1 of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (or Level 1 under the former testing system).

Special Research Students

Non-degree seeking students who wish to receive research advice as a special research master students (research period: 3-12 months) or special research doctoral students (research period: 6-24 months) under the “Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program” at Yokohama National University (YNU) must complete the following process.

  1. Please confirm the department in charge of student exchange at your university whether your university or graduate school has a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on student exchange with YNU under which students can attend YNU without paying additional tuition.
  2. If your university or graduate school has the MoU with YNU, please confirm with the department in charge of student exchange at your university the application procedures for student exchange (with tuition waiver), receive a recommendation, and complete the necessary procedures.

    Please note that applicants for this program must, in principle, be from the university or graduate school that has the MoU with YNU. If your university or graduate school does not have the MoU with YNU, you must consult with your potential academic advisor at YNU beforehand.
