Motivation is a complex construct that includes:
1. The reasons a learner has for needing or wanting to learn an L2 (i.e. motivational orientation).
2. The effort a learner makes to learn the L2, the learner’s persistence with the learning task, and the impact immediate context has on these (i.e. behavioural motivation).
3. The effect that the learner’s evaluation of his/her progress has on subsequent learning behavior (i.e. attributional motivation).
This talk will first examine how motivation is addressed in popular teacher guides (e.g. Ur, 1996; Hedge, 2000) and then provide an over view of how motivation has been theorized and investigated in second language acquisition research (SLA). The teacher guides all emphasise the importance of teacher motivation – Ur (1996) refers to ‘the sheer importance of motivation in successful language learning’ (p. 275) - and discuss it in terms of the distinction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. SLA research on motivation has gone through a number of phases (Dörnyei, 2005) but currently emphasizes the dynamic nature of motivation and how motivation is ‘constructed’ moment-by-moment through interaction. The talk concludes by examining the strategies that teachers can use to help motivate their students.
