In the evening of July 10th, YNU International Student Center (ISC) 105 held a BBQ party in the open space in front of the library. It was an annual event aiming to promote active exchange among YNU students coming from many different countries. Although the ISC 105 staffs carefully set its schedule, they just couldn’t predict the weather! They had to postpone the party for two rainy days, and in the third evening they were relieved to see clouds finally cleared out.

The party started with popular Japanese games: “Daruma-san ga koronda” (Bodhidharma fell down; a children’s game similar to “Statues” or “Red Light Green Light”) and “Suika wari” (Watermelon splitting.) The first one was arranged as an international version. Participants had to dash and pick up as many as small slips within the Oni’s “Daruma-san ga koronda” calls. Their quick motion on a slope looked so funny! Many laughed and enjoyed the game. The next “Suika wari” was also amusing. The players walked blindfolded and looked for watermelons. They were guided by other’s shouting “Right!” “Left!” and successfully split the watermelons. After the game, everyone shared the tasty watermelons.

It was in the midst of Ramadan, and so BBQ started after sunset. Here and there the participants enjoyed BBQ meal and friendly talk around grills. One table for haral food was welcomed by muslim students. It was shared with other students who were curious and interested, and they enjoyed the food together. As a dessert, many students were delighted to taste toasted mashmallows.

Over 100 students (balance of almost 50/50 between Japanese and other nationalities) gathered although it fell on Friday evening. Many of them seemed to enjoy the party and meeting with new people coming from different background on campus.

YNU International Strategy Organization and the ISC staffs would like to express our appreciation to those who worked for this event.
