On Thursday, May 23, 2013, a total of 23 students from George Mason University (Virginia, US) visited YNU under Youth Exchange Program with North America “KAKEHASHI Project –The Bridge for Tomorrow” promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The project “aims to heighten potential interest in Japan and increase the number of overseas visitors to the country, as well as enhance international understanding of the “Japan brand”, or the nation’s strengths and attractiveness, such Japanese-style value and “Cool Japan”.” (Quote from Japan Foundation website)

After greetings by YNU Executive Director for International Affairs and Planning Professor Hitoshi Yamada and a speech in wonderful Japanese by GMU English Language Institute Curriculum Coordinator Dr Jane Kirsch, YNU Student International Volunteer Waka Saotome (4th year student of the College of Engineering) made a brief introduction of YNU. She not only explained the outline of the university but also mentioned on the up-coming university festival “Seiryo-sai”. All the GMU students were listening to her presentation very eagerly.

After the presentation, the College of Business Administration Assistant Professor Hisami Andrade gave a lecture “Japanese Society and Culture” showing many pictures and videos. Although some of the GMU students have studied Japanese and Japanese culture at the university, they all seemed to be fascinated to learn Japanese sense of the season, attitude towards religion and food culture for the first time.

After the lecture, the GMU students met 28 YNU students and had lively discussions in four groups. They immediately opened up to each other and enjoyed the conversation on such topics as student lives in Japan and the States and the similarities and differences between the two countries.

Following lunch and campus tour with the YNU students, the GMU Students participated in “Try on Yukata” Workshop in the afternoon. The College of Education and Human Sciences Professor Yayoi Satsumoto and her students made demonstrations and explained how to dress yukata step by step. With their assistance, all the GMU students managed to put on yukata by themselves. Since it was the first time for most of the students to try on yukata, they were all excited and taking photos again and again. Some students became totally fond of it, asking where they could buy one.

We hope that this event was a good opportunity for both GMU students and YNU students to understand each other better.
