Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences

The Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences(EIS) was established at Yokohama National University in April 2001, and designed to promote practical education and research for a fused interdisciplinary field of environmental issues, which needs rapid responses, and the area of advanced information science. The former Division of Artificial Environment and Systems in the Graduate School of Engineering and the former Institute of Environmental Science and Technology were progressively consolidated into the EIS,as well as were assembled into related study fields involved in the Faculty of Engineering, Education and Human Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration. The EIS is a wholly independent graduate school, and composed of an educational division, the Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, and a research division, the Faculty of Environment and Information Sciences.
The five-year course of study at the EIS is divided into two parts: an initial two-year course leading to a master's degree and a subsequent three-year course leading to a doctoral degree. The educational part of the EIS consists of the following five departments:
| Department | Class Size | |
|---|---|---|
| Day Course | Night Course | |
| Total | 146 | 60 |
| Environment and Natural Sciences | 33 | 15 |
| Environment and System Sciences | 40 | 16 |
| Information Media and Environment Sciences | 35 | 15 |
| Innovation Management and Environmental Sciences | 10 | 5 |
| Risk Management and Environmental Sciences | 28 | 9 |
Faculty of Environment and Information Sciences
The research part of the EIS consists of the following three divisions:
- Division of Natural Environment and Information
- Division of Artificial Environment and Information
- Division of Social Environment and Information
Department of Environment and Natural Sciences
The department provides research and education on ecology, geo-science, bioscience and applied chemistry. It assists graduates to grasp the systems of life on the earth from the micro systems of molecules and cells to macro systems of geo-environmental changes and ecosystems.
The department trains students to become researchers and technical and managerial staff members who can contribute to the realization of ideal global environments.
- Earth and Ecology Course
- Life and Environment Sciences Course
Department of Environment and System Sciences
The department provides research and education on designing and constructing environmentally friendly materials, structures and systems, with an added-view point of life cycle assessment. The department trains individuals who are able to make creative, practical and multimodal policies, find comprehensive solutions and address global issues to bring about a recycling and sustainable society.
- Material Systems Course
- System Design Course
Department of Information Media and Environment Sciences
In addition to data processing technologies for creating advanced information environments, the department provides comprehensive research and education on information analysis, modeling and design, and on mathematical analytical approaches to the complex systems in nature. The department trains students to become researchers, development engineers and environmental analysts as well as system designers and system integrators in the field of information and environment.
- Information Media Course
- Environmental Information Analysis Course
Department of Innovation Management and Environmental Sciences
The department takes an interdisciplinary approach to social and environmental issues, providing three different knowledge spheres: (1) basic ideas and promotion strategies for innovation, (2) overall knowledge on social factors such as changes in social environment, human cognitive attitudes and social acceptance procedures, and (3) knowledge on earth or natural environmental issues. The department trains students to be advanced specialists in environmental and Information Communication Technology (ICT) business, technological innovation management and assessment, public policy making and NGO activities.
Department of Risk Management and Environmental Sciences
Focusing on basic principles of risk in the living environments of humans, plants and animals, as well as on disaster related risk for cities and industrial activity, the department provides research and education to comprehend the structures of risks in the modern world and how social factors influence the risks. The department trains students in skills to devise methods for environmental risk management, evaluation and improvement.
- Environment Management Course
- Safety Management Course
Research Institute of Environment and Information Sciences
The Research Institute of Environment and Information Sciences consists of three divisions; Natural Environment and Information, Artificial Environment and Information, and Social Environment and Information. Its mission is to conduct innovative and leading research in environmental and information sciences, and to solve complex problems in order to achieve a sustainable society.
