YNU Attended 2010 Japan Education Fairs in Indonesia

A "2010 Japan Education Fairs – Indonesia", sponsored by the Japan Student Services Organization (an Independent Administrative Institution), was held in Jakarta on Saturday, October 2, 2010 and in Surabaya on Sunday, October 3, 2010. Tetsuya Sumi (Lecturer, Faculty of Education and Human Sciences) and Mr. Gou Katahira (Chief, Office for Establishment of the Faculty of Engineering Science) attended this event representing YNU.

38 academic institutions exhibited booths in Jakarta and 22 in Surabaya with visitors numbering 2,615 and 1,705 respectively. Our booth was quite successful, with all the English brochures gone before noon. It made it necessary to explain about YNU in English and through an interpreter in Indonesian off of Japanese brochures in the afternoon. All told, 400 students and parents visited YNU's booth in Jakarta, and 200 in Surabaya. Some parents even came to learn about Japanese universities for their elementary-school children, indicating a high degree of interest in studying abroad in Indonesia.

What struck us most during this Japan Education Fair was that people were very interested in Japan. We asked the visitors why and found out that, in recent years, people have been very much interested in Japanese culture, particularly due to anime, cos-play, Akihabara, and other so called "Cool Japan" stuff. A person who was teaching Japanese at a local university told me, too, that because of such influence, the number of students taking Japanese has been increasing and so has the demand for Japanese language teachers.

The Fair made us realize anew how much people are interested in Japanese universities, given the number of students wishing to study in Japan either in college or graduate school. The need had never been felt stronger outside of this Fair to improve the system to accept foreign students at YNU.

More Japan Education Fairs will be held in various parts of Asia going forward. We intend to participate in Fairs in Beijing-Shanghai (China, October), Hanoi-Ho Chi Min (Vietnam, November) and in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, December). If interested in studying at YNU, we urge you to come to the venue. Details will be posted as the dates draw near.
