YNU’s Appeal at the 2015 Japan-bound International Students Fair in South Korea

YNU participated in the Japan Students Services Organization(JASSO) sponsored 2015 Japan-bound International Students Fair in Pusan on Saturday, September 12 and Seoul on Sunday, September 13. YNU was represented by Professor Daniel Heller from the International Graduate School of Social Sciences and Mr. Okada, an assistant manager in charge of admissions from the College of Science and Engineering. At the YNU booth in both Pusan and Seoul, our interpreter was a current YNU undergraduate student from Korea, who was able to provide the visitors with a personal description of YNU from the perspective of an international student.

The fair in Pusan was held at BEXCO and attracted 1,670 visitors, of which 121 stopped by the YNU booth. The fair in Seoul was held at SETEC and attracted 2,580 visitors, of which 230 stopped by the YNU booth.

The vast majority of visitors to the YNU booth were interested in undergraduate education. Such visitors were mainly high school students, but there were even a few Jr. High School students and quite a few parents. The visitors to the booth tended to be specifically interested in hearing about the entrance exams at YNU, available scholarships, dormitories, and the courses of study offered. For much of the time, the YNU booth had a line of several people waiting to ask questions.

There were also questions about graduate school studies, Japanese student life, exchange students opportunities. It was clear that there is a strong interest among Korean students in the possibility of studying in Japan. Most of the high school students who came to the YNU booth were quite modest about their Japanese language ability, but we were quite impressed that so many of them could communicate so fluently in Japanese.
