YNU-PolyU-SCU Joint Workshop

Workshop on Frontiers of Multi-Hazard Mitigation Strategies in Urban Areas
– Highlighting geotechnical aspects –

Expanding urban areas as well as the increase in laid-waste mountain slopes in areas of shrinking population have led to increasing the potential for serious geo-hazard in urban areas. Hong Kong, Chengdu and Yokohama, as crowned and prominent centers of economy and urban lives, have been facing the common problems.
Hong Kong has been expanding further upon the steeper natural hillsides since the 1972 Hong Kong rainstorm disasters. The impact of the Wenchuan Earthquake of 2008, which hit mountains rising behind Chengdu, was not only felt through the death toll but also increased number of post-quake slope failures. Yokohama, which was once completely flattened in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, has long been expanding upon both flat lands and hill tops.
Given these geo-environmental conditions, the workshop aims to discuss rational strategies for disaster mitigation and better sustainable development through the knowledge and practices of experts from Hong Kong, Chengdu and Yokohama.
