The 5th Meeting of Port-city University League Held in Shanghai

Organized and co-sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd, (SIPG), the 5th Meeting of the Port-city University League was successfully held in Shanghai from October 10th to 13th under the theme of “Better Port, Better City”. From YNU, International Graduate School of Social Sciences Professor Ichiro Araki (Special Advisor to the President for International Affairs), Faculty of Engineering Professor Makoto Arai, Professor Takanori Hino, Professor Yasumi Kawamura, Associate Professor Yoshiki Nishi and Assistant Professor Yoshiaki Hirakawa made presentations, and Mr. Ken-ichiro Murakami and Ms. Xianglan Li of International Division participated in the meeting representing the PUL Secretariat.

PUL was established in Yokohama in 2006 based upon YNU’s initial proposal among others. It aims at building wide and deep relationships among prominent universities in the world’s port-city areas. Its first meeting was held in Yokohama, the second in Chennai (India), the third in Lisbon (Portugal), the forth again in Yokohama. This year, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is the original member of PUL, hosted the fifth meeting in Shanghai.

On the first and second day, over 30 experts from 7 universities exchanged up-to-date information and discussions on a wide range of topics including engineering, management systems, logistics, trade, legal and urban issues. On the third and fourth day, the participants had technical visits to Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port, SIPG, Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Deep Offshore Basin in Minhang Campus, and Shanghai Expo Site.

At the round-table meeting held on the first and second day, the representatives from each participating universities agreed that the University of Southampton (UK) will host the next meeting, and welcomed Dalian University of Technology (China) and the University of Incheon (Korea) as new members of PUL. This made the total number of PUL 14 universities from 11 countries: the University of Southampton (UK), the University of British Colombia (Canada), Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (India), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dalian University of Technology (China), the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), the University of Lisbon (Portugal), Pukyong National University, the University of Incheon (Korea), the University of Alexandria (Egypt), Istanbul Technical University (Turkey), Yokohama City University and YNU (Japan).
