YNU Tuition Waiver Program for International Students

For privately financed international students applying for admission to YNU in or after April 2020:

To promote the acceptance of academically excellent international students and provide financial support after their admission to YNU, a new tuition waiver program has been established for privately financed international students who enter YNU in or after April 2020.(Note: Contents have been renewed on September 24, 2019, for more accurate explanations.)

The new program is available to privately financed international students entering YNU in or after April 2020 and satisfying the application requirements. As for privately financed students who have already enrolled in YNU and those who will enter YNU before April 2020, the existing YNU tuition waiver program will be applied until they graduate from YNU. (Click hereopen a new window. to see the existing program’s outline and application procedures.)

Outline of the new program

  • Screening is solely based on academic performance. High-ranked applicants will be entitled to a 100%, 50%, or 30% exemption from tuition fees according to their academic results. Likewise, those entering doctoral programs will be entitled to a 100% or 50% exemption from tuition fees.
  • Those who wish to receive the waiver must submit the application form to the relevant college or graduate school when applying for admission. They will receive notification of the outcome along with the announcement of entrance examination results.
  • The tuition waiver period is for two consecutive semesters after admission to YNU. Following that, students must apply each semester. The University will review applicants’ qualifications, as well as percentages of exemption from tuition fees, based on their academic performance.

Eligibility

Privately financed international students who have or are scheduled to obtain the status of residence as "Student" required by Japanese law ("Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act") and apply for entrance examinations designated by YNU* for regular curricula offered by undergraduate colleges and graduate schools at YNU (Refer to (1) and (2) in the following "Remarks/Notes") are eligible for the program.

※Only the entrance examinations of "Yokohama Global Education Program (YGEP) N1 Standard Admission” and "YOKOHAMA Creative City Studies (YCCS)" for undergraduate college applicants, and entrance examinations designated separately by each graduate school for graduate school applicants are acknowledged as "entrance examinations designated by YNU".

Application procedure

Applicants must submit the "Application Form/ Expense Plan Form"PDFファイルが開きます to the relevant undergraduate college or graduate school when applying for admission.

Screening

Screening will be held based on results of entrance examinations. As for undergraduate and master’s programs, applicants who ranked top 50% among privately financed international students who passed the examination will be eligible, and entitled to a 100%, 50%, or 30% exemption from tuition fees according to the entrance examination results. (However, even those who are eligible may not be entitled to an exemption, as the quota given to each undergraduate college and graduate school is limited.) As for doctoral programs, applicants who ranked top 50% among privately financed international students who passed the examination will receive a 100% exemption from tuition fees; the remaining students, a 50% exemption. (In any case, the rate of exemption may rise depending on the situation of other prospective recipients’ completion of admission procedures. The finalized rate will be announced at the time of the official notification after entering YNU.)

Exemption period

Successful applicants will be exempted from paying tuition fees for two consecutive semesters after admission to YNU. (It will not be extended if they take a leave of absence.) For the third and subsequent semesters at YNU, students should apply for the tuition waiver program for each semester. Applicants’ qualifications, as well as percentages of exemption from tuition fees, will be reviewed based on academic performance at YNU. (Those who failed to qualify for the program at the time of admission to YNU may be able to receive it for their third and subsequent semesters if their academic performance at YNU is high. Students can also apply for the program if they had to be officially absent from YNU for a year or more due to sickness, military service, etc.)
