Regarding Cancellation of AY2019 Commencement and Graduation Ceremonies

Despite the efforts by Yokohama National University to prevent the infection and spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the risk of community-acquired infection is increasing in Kanagawa Prefecture. In addition, on February 25, 2020, the "Basic Policies for Combating Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)" (Task Force Against Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)) and the "Regarding Attitudes About Commencement and Entrance Ceremonies of Schools" (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) were announced, which indicate that "This is an extremely important time to minimize health damage in Japan in the future" and it is important to contrive ways of holding commencement ceremonies, for example, by "reducing participant numbers."

After considerations based on the above, YNU have decided to cancel the Commencement and Graduation Ceremonies that were planned to be held on March 24, 2020, where students who finished the courses were supposed to gather at Yokohama Culture Gymnasium. Instead, a diploma awarding will be held at each college or graduate school, which can be participated only by students who finished the courses, at Tokiwadai Campus. Further detail of the event will be announced through YNU website later. If you cannot receive the diploma on this day, please contact the academic office of your college / graduate school.

Though this was a difficult decision when considering the feelings of the students who finished the courses as well as their families, we appreciate it if you could understand our decision by placing top priority on the safety of the nearly 5000 participants and preventing the spread of infection. In April, the alumni and students who graduates YNU will spread their wings and fly to new horizons by pursuing their career or continuing further education. We would appreciate your understanding so that students can take a new step by feeling safe at this moment and to prevent further infection in Japan and other countries.

While we understand that many families planned to participate in the ceremonies on March 24, we would kindly ask you to refrain from visiting Tokiwadai Campus because it would become difficult to secure safety if many participants visit the Campus.

We may take new actions in the future following any changes of the situation or by the notification from the government or any other organizations. Please check our website and other notices for further announcements from us regarding any such new action.
