令和8年度 入学生への祝辞

新入生の皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。
そして、ご家族の皆様にも心よりお祝いを申し上げます。

今日、皆さんを前にして、私は一つのことを考えていました。
人は、なぜ学ぶのでしょうか。

将来のためでしょうか。
仕事のためでしょうか。

もちろん、それも大切な理由です。
しかし、人が学ぶ理由には、もっと根源的なものがあるのではないでしょうか。

人は本来、
世界を理解したいという知的な衝動を持つ存在だからです。

世界の仕組みが少し分かったとき。
まだ誰も気づいていないことに気づいたとき。
自分の考えが昨日よりも少し深くなったと感じたとき。

その瞬間、私たちは静かな喜びを感じます。

その喜びこそが、人を学びへと向かわせるのだと思います。

大学とは、
その知る喜びを、思う存分追いかけることができる場所です。

では、もう一つ問いを重ねてみましょう。
なぜ大学なのでしょうか。

いまは知識だけなら、どこでも手に入る時代です。
本もあります。
インターネットもあります。
世界中の講義をオンラインで学ぶこともできます。

それでも人は大学に集まります。

なぜでしょうか。

それは、知は一人では完成しないからです。

異なる人が出会い、
異なる考えがぶつかり、
そのなかで新しい知が生まれていきます。

大学とは、
知と知が出会う場所なのです。

横浜国立大学のキャンパスには「宮脇の森」があります。

この森は、最初から森だったわけではありません。
小さな苗木が植えられ、長い年月のなかで互いに競い、支え合いながら、やがて豊かな森へと育ってきました。

森とは、一本の木でできているのではありません。
異なる木々がともに育つことで、森は強く、そして豊かになります。

大学もまた同じです。

異なる問いを持つ人が集まり、
異なる知が出会い、
互いに刺激し合う。

その中から、新しい知が生まれていきます。

私はその姿を、
「知の総和」と呼びたいと思います。

一人の知は小さいかもしれません。
しかし知と知が出会うとき、それは大きな力になります。

横浜国立大学とは、

異なる知が出会い、新しい未来が生まれる場所なのです。

ここ横浜は、古くから世界へ開かれた場所です。

多くの人が行き交い、
多くの文化が交わり、
新しいものが生まれてきた都市です。

横浜国立大学もまた、そのような場所にあります。

この都市のなかで、大学は社会と向き合いながら学ぶ場所でもあります。

知は、社会と結びつくとき、
さらに大きな力を持ちます。

皆さんは今日、この横浜国立大学で学ぶ道を選びました。
私は、その選択が、皆さんの人生を豊かにするものであると信じています。

では、最後にもう一つ問いを残したいと思います。
皆さんは、この大学で、何を問うのでしょうか。

学生生活は長いようで、あっという間です。
しかし、その時間は人生のなかでも特別な時間です。

自分の頭で考え、
自分の問いを見つけ、
自分の知を育てていく時間です。

学びとは、
自分の世界を少しずつ広げていく、静かな冒険です。

皆さんの背後には、この大学を築いてきた多くの人々の歩みがあります。
そして皆さんの前には、まだ誰も見たことのない未来が広がっています。

一本の木が森をつくるのではありません。

多くの木々がともに育つことで、森は豊かになります。

皆さん一人ひとりの知が出会い、響き合うとき、
この大学は社会を支える大きな知の力となっていきます。

皆さんがここで育てる問いが、
やがて人々の未来を静かに照らしていくことを、私は信じています。

そして最後に、もう一度問いを残したいと思います。
皆さんは、この横浜国立大学で、どのような問いを見つけるのでしょうか。

Message to New Students for 2026

Congratulations to all of you on entering Yokohama National University (YNU).
I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to your families.

Today, in front of you I was thinking about one thing.
Why do people learn?

For their future?
Or, for their career building?

Of course, these are important reasons for learning.
However, I believe there is a more fundamental reason behind people’s learning.

Naturally, people have an intellectual impulse to know the world.

When we learned a bit about how the world works, when we noticed what no one else notices, or when we feel that we have gained a deeper insight than yesterday, we find a quiet sense of pleasure.

I believe that pleasure encourages people toward learning.

A university is a place where you can pursue the pleasure of knowing to your heart’s content.

I’d like to ask you one more question.
Why university?

We are living in times where we can gain knowledge from anywhere, such as books and the internet. We can receive lectures online from around the world.

Nevertheless, people come to university.

Why?

It is because knowledge cannot be created by one person.

New knowledge are created through the meeting of different people and through a clash of ideas.

A university is a place where knowledge meets knowledge.

On the YNU campus, there is the Miyawaki Forest.

It was not a forest from the beginning.
Tree saplings were planted, and they competed with and support one another over many years, eventually growing into a rich forest.

One tree cannot make a forest.
A forest becomes strong and rich only when different trees grow together.

The same is true of university.

People with different questions get together, and different knowledge meets.
They inspire and stimulate one another, through which new knowledge is generated.

I would like to call it the “sum of knowledge.”

The knowledge of each individual might be small.
However, when knowledge meets knowledge, it becomes great power.

YNU is a place where different knowledge meets to create a new future.

Yokohama is a place traditionally open to the world.

It is a city with a long history of free exchange of people and culture, creating something new.

YNU is also located in such a place.

In this city, YNU provides an opportunity to learn while engaging with society.

Knowledge gains more power by connecting with society.

Today, you have chosen to learn at YNU.
I believe that your choice will make your life more fulfilling.

I have one last question.
What questions do you want to ask at YNU?

University life seems long but short.
However, it is a special time in your life.

It is a precious time for you to think by yourself, find your own questions, and develop your knowledge.

Learning is a quiet adventure that enables you to gradually expand your own world.

Behind you is the history of many people who have built and developed YNU.
And a future no one has ever seen lies ahead of you.

A single tree cannot make a forest.

With many trees growing together, the forest becomes rich.

When the knowledge of each of you comes together and resonates, YNU will become the great power of knowledge that acts as a secure foundation for society.

I believe that the questions you develop here will eventually contribute to gently light up the future for people.

Lastly, let me ask you a question once again.
