令和7年度 秋季入学生への祝辞

新入生の皆さん！

ご入学を心よりお祝い申し上げます。 本日から皆さんは、横浜国立大学という学び舎の一員となり、 未来を担う旅路を、ともに歩み始めます。

本年は、昭和百年。 そして、終戦八十年という、大きな節目にあたります。 戦後の歩みを顧みれば、知の力が新たな社会を築き、 平和を守り続けてきたことを、私たちは深く銘記しなければなりません。

しかし今、世界は再び大きく揺らいでいます。 だからこそ、互いに学び合い、理解し合い、 未来をともに創り上げていく責務が、ここに生きる私たちに課されているのです。

横浜国立大学は、2004年の法人化に際して、 「実践性」「先進性」「開放性」「国際性」を理念として掲げ、 さらに二年前には「多様性」を新たに加えました。

これは、単なる言葉の付加ではありません。 人と人との違いを受け入れ、それを力に変えていくこと。 その精神こそが、学びの礎であり、 人類社会の持続を支える要となるのです。

私は「知の総和」という考えを、繰り返し述べてまいりました。

それは、一人ひとりが培う知と、その知を分かち合う人数との掛け算によって、 社会全体の知は無限に広がり得る。 そう理解したからです。

横浜国立大学は、百五十年を超える歴史の中で、 幾度となく社会の変化に応え、人材を育み、知を磨き、 時代を支えてきました。

そして今、その歩みは、地球規模の課題と真摯に向き合う、 新たな段階を迎えています。

本学の研究は、未来の人類の生存に直結する最前線にあります。 気候変動と台風災害に挑む「台風科学技術研究センター」。 社会の基盤を革新する「半導体後工程」や「量子情報・通信」。 持続可能な未来を拓く「蓄電技術」や「水素エネルギー研究」。 それらを導く人文・社会科学の研究活動。

これらの営みは、地球と人類の未来を守るものであり、 皆さんが歩む学びの道は、世界の希望へと直結しています。

ここで、改めて強調します。 その力の根幹にあるのが「知の総和」という考え方です。

一人の学びは光です。

その光がもう一人の光と交わり、さらにまた一人へと伝わるとき――。 知は連鎖し、社会を照らす大いなる輝きとなります。

私は、その知の総和を真に拡張させる鍵は「多様性」であると考えています。 異なる文化、異なる言語、異なる発想が交わり、 互いを尊重し、掛け算されるとき――。 知の総和は飛躍的に高まり、 これまで誰も見たことのない、新しい地平を切り拓くのです。

多様性は、単なる差異の共存ではありません。 未来を創造するための力の源泉なのです。

しかし今、世界はしばしば自国主義へと傾き、 分断の影が広がっています。

だからこそ大学は、国境や民族、価値観を越えた、 対話と共創の場であり続けなければなりません。 ここに集う皆さんが互いに認め合い、学び合う姿そのものが、人類の未来を照らす希望の象徴なのです。

新入生の皆さん！

どうか勇気をもって学びを深め、知を磨き、 互いの違いを認め尊んでください。

その歩みこそが、「知の総和 × 多様性」を未来へと継承し、 平和と繁栄を支える礎となるのです。

知の総和の向上は、未来を導く光明です。

皆さんが研鑽を積み、互いに響き合うとき、 その光はより強く輝き、次代を切り拓く力となるでしょう。

先に述べた通り、横浜国立大学は、師範学校の創立から百五十年、 工業・商業の高等教育機関としても百年以上の伝統を誇ります。 その悠久の歴史の上に立つ皆さんは、これからの百年を築く、新たな知の担い手です。

世界が自国主義の潮流に傾く中で、横浜国立大学は、 国境を越えて集う留学生の存在を大切にしています。 皆さん一人ひとりが、互いの違いを尊び、共に学ぶ姿そのものが、 未来の国際協調を体現しているのです。

どうか、自らの知を磨き合い、知の総和を未来へと継承してください。 その歩みこそが、平和と繁栄を支える礎となり、 世界に希望をもたらすものとなります。

Message to New Students in Fall 2025

Welcome, new students!

Congratulations on enrolling at Yokohama National University. Starting today, you are all members of the YNU community. Together, we begin a shared journey to shape the future.

This year, 2025, corresponds to the 100th year of the Showa era. It also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Looking back on the postwar years, we should remember that knowledge helped rebuild society and preserve peace.

But now the world is once again in turmoil. That is why the responsibility rests with those of us here today to learn from one another, to understand one another, and to build the future together.

When Yokohama National University was incorporated in 2004, it adopted “Be Active,” “Be Innovative,” “Be Open,” and “Be Global” as its fundamental principles. Two years ago, it added “Be Diverse.”

This is not merely a matter of adding words. It means embracing our differences and turning them into strengths. That very spirit is the foundation of learning and the key to sustaining human society.

I often talk about the idea of “the sum of knowledge.”

When the knowledge cultivated by each person is multiplied by the number of people who share this knowledge, our society’s knowledge can grow without limit. That is what we mean by the sum of knowledge.

During its more than 150 years of history, Yokohama National University has on countless occasions adapted to evolving social conditions, nurtured talent, advanced knowledge, and served the needs of the times.

We now enter a new phase as we take on global challenges with resolve.

Our research stands at the forefront, directly tied to humanity’s future survival. Our Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center addresses climate change and typhoon-related disasters. Our projects in semiconductor back-end processes and quantum information and communication technologies are reshaping society’s foundations. Energy storage technology and hydrogen energy research are paving the way for a sustainable future. Our research in the humanities and social sciences steers these endeavors.

All of these efforts help safeguard the future of the Earth and humanity. The path of learning you follow brings hope to the world.

Let me emphasize this once more. That strength is founded on the idea of the sum of knowledge.

One person’s learning is a light.

When that light meets another’s and is passed on to yet another’s, it sets off a chain reaction of knowledge, which grows into a vast brilliance that lights up society.

I believe that the key to truly expanding the sum of knowledge is diversity. When different cultures, languages, and ideas come together, when people show mutual respect, and when those ideas are shared and multiplied, the sum of knowledge grows exponentially and opens new horizons no one has seen before.

Diversity goes beyond different people living together; it is a source of strength that shapes the future.

Yet today, the world is repeatedly turning toward nationalism and a cloud of division is casting a shadow over us.

For that reason, a university must continue to serve as a space for dialogue and co-creation that reaches beyond national borders, ethnic groups, and value systems. When those gathered here acknowledge one another and learn from one another, that becomes a symbol of hope that can illuminate the future of humankind.

New students!

Be courageous as you pursue your studies, refine your knowledge, and honor one another’s differences.

It is precisely that path that passes on “the sum of knowledge x diversity ,” to future generations. In doing so, it becomes the foundation that upholds peace and prosperity.

As the sum of knowledge grows, it serves as a beacon guiding us to the future.

When you commit yourselves to your studies and allow your efforts to resonate with one another’s, that light will shine brighter and become the strength that shapes the next era.

As I said earlier, Yokohama National University traces its roots to a normal school (a teacher-training school) founded 150 years ago. It also has more than a century of tradition as a higher education institution for technology and commerce. With such a long and rich history behind us, we are the new custodians of knowledge who will build the century to come.

As the world increasingly leans toward nationalism, Yokohama National University values the presence of international students who gather here from around the world. When you respect one another’s differences and learn together, you demonstrate what future international collaboration will look like.

Please hone your knowledge together and pass on the sum of knowledge to the future. Your journey here will become the foundation that sustains peace and prosperity and bring hope to the world.
